Abita Doberge Chocolate Cake Stout

Review Date 7/4/2021  By John Staradumsky

I saw it at Target, and I had to have some: Abita Chocolate Doberge Cake Stout. Abita has been a long-time beloved brewery for me, so that was certainly part of the allure. But hey, chocolate cake stout? There was no turning back at that point, and into my cart a six-pack went.

Abita says:

Fashioned from the classic New Orleans dessert, our Chocolate Doberge (pronounced dough-bash) Cake Stout is layered with sweet cocoa nibs, vanilla & milk sugar. This beer has a rich & decadent sweetness with velvety chocolate notes. No matter how you pronounce it, this cake is one of the most appreciated and desired locally created desserts for any occasion.

I don’t know about you, but to me this sounds like the perfect model for a stout. I got my bottles home and drank one shortly thereafter.

Abita Chocolate Doberge Cake Stout has an alcohol content of 8% by volume, which was higher than I suspected it would be when I bought it. It was reasonably priced, too: $8.54 the six-pack at Target. It has 15 IBUs. I shared two bottles with my daughter and saved the rest for myself.

Abita Chocolate Doberge Cake Stout pours to a jet-black color with a thick creamy tan head of foam and a sinfully rich nose of chocolate and vanilla. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body and layered with chocolate and vanilla notes in turn, just like the cake. It finishes a tad sweet, though the alcohol warmth balances that off slightly. All that’s missing are the pudding layers, but if you close eyes and try really hard, you might be bale to imagine them in there.

Another entry in the “pastry stout” universe, it would go quite well with a slice of its namesake. Or just have it as dessert in a glass. Either way, you’re in for a treat.

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
