Many moons ago, way back in the late 1980s actually, I had a buddy that drank macrobrew, and not much else. Now, I’m pretty sure I mentioned him in a prior review, but be that as it may, I’m going to bring him up again whilst pondering Abita Chocolate Weiss. Now, this friend was from Chicago, not New Orleans, so you may wonder the connection, but I assure you it’s not geographical; rather, it’s more a matter of classification. You see, Curt (his real name) had a special term for the craft beers I imbibed in those days: weird beer.
And you see, my friends, as I sat at the bar at Taco Mac and sipped my mug of Abita Chocolate Weiss I thought, “Man, this is a weird beer.” And there it is. The wisdom of Curt came to fruition after so many, many years. Abita Chocolate Weiss is an entry in the Abita Select series of draft only beers, and it seems to be a dunkelweizen in style, but with an extra dash of chocolate malt for good measure. I think.
Abita doesn’t really have anything to say about this beer on their website, so you’ll have only my word to go by. I can tell you only that the beer has 5.5% alcohol by volume according to Taco Mac and was quite fairly priced at $5.50 for a full mug pour.
My mug of Abita Chocolate Weiss arrived a dark brownish black in color with a massive head of sparsely packed foam and hints of chocolate and clove in the nose. Taking a sip, banana is the most prominent feature in the palate along with tart wheat, a hint of butter, light clove, and a gently bitter finish.
Abita Chocolate Weiss seems sort of like a bitter chocolate covered banana studded with cloves. It really is a weird beer though, and I’m not sure exactly what I think about it. I would drink it again though, and the price was right. It was a tasty little brew enjoyed watching football on a Sunday afternoon.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
