Here comes a really short beer review for you! For September of 2016, Taco Mac is featuring Abita as the brewery of the month, and one of the beers I ordered up as a result is Abita White Linen Wit. This appears to be a draft-only, Taco Mac only offering. Stylistically, this is a Belgian Witbier, a cloudy wheat brew usually made with curacao orange peel and coriander.
Taco Mac says this about it:
White Linen Wit is a Belgian-style Witbier that is brewed with pale malt, wheat and oats. A classic Belgian Witbier yeast is used and this imparts flavors and aromas of banana and bubble gum. Orange peels, coriander and other spices are added during the brewing process. It is hopped with German Perle hops, but just enough to balance and compliment the flavors of the other ingredients. The result is a classic brew that showcases the wheat malt, fruity flavors of the yeast and the spices that are added in the brewhouse.
There is no mention of this beer on the Abita website and very little information at all on the web. Taco Mac gives the alcohol content as 5.2% by volume and I paid just $5.50 for a 20-ounce mug.
My mug of Abita White Linen Wit arrived a cloudy yellow white color with a medium head of loosely packed bubbles and a bright spicy citrus and coriander nose. Taking a sip, the beer is tart crackery wheaty up front, the spicy coriander is bold and in your face as is the bitter orange rind, and the tart wheat returns in the finish.
This is very impressive wit indeed and definitely a beer I would seek out if it were sold in bottles.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
