Arches Winter's Night

It may be spring but the last few days have seen wintery cold mornings. We’ve even had freeze warnings, so despite what the calendar says, Mother Nature moves to her own schedule. As fate would have it, I had a 32-ounce crowler of Arches Winter’s Night, a Munich Dunkel, in the fridge. So, I enjoyed a spring night on a day that bean with a winter’s morning with a Winter’s Night. Actually, two Winter’s Nights.

Traditional lagers, inspired ales. That’s the motto of the Arches Brewing Company of Atlanta, Georgia, and I love that they do classic styles and not fifty million IPAs and weirdo stouts. Rest assured, I love those beers too, but in balance with the classics. Arches Winter’s Night is a classic Munich Dunkel, and who doesn’t love a classic Munich Dunkel?

Arches says:

Munich Dunkel is a culture-defining style that has been brewed for over five centuries. This traditional European dark lager is characterized by a striking dark color and a strong malt flavor. It is complemented by an elusive light mouthfeel which offers a clean crisp finish. This style pairs well with a hearty meal on a cold winter night.

Arches Winter’s Night has an alcohol content of 5.4% by volume with 18 IBUS. I paid $10.25 for my crowler at Stout’s here in Canton. I bought it on January 23rd, and I drank it on April 4th.

Arches Winter’s Night pours to a very dark mahogany color with a thick creamy tan head and a spicy, coffeeish nose. Taking a sip, the beer is clean and smooth, chocolaty, coffeeish, with a spicy balancing finish of greasy herbal hops.

Arches Winter’s Night is truly delicious, and everything I want a dunkel to be. It’s almost as good as some of the finer German examples I’ve tried, and I cannot think of higher praise than that.

Update 7/25/2022: Here's a first! Christmas in July-in a crowler!  I saved this crowler of my beloved Arches Winter Night since last January when I had it filled at Stout's here in Canton. Toasty! Nutty! Roasty! Hinting at licorice and coffee! It has held up remarkably well, but why not? What is a crowler if not a big old can of beer, and of course, I kept it refrigerated constantly. A perfect gift indeed for today, Christmas Day in July!

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
