So, Avery White Rascal. How can it be that I’ve never had that one before? I’m sure I don’t know. I’ve had a lot of beers from Avery after all. And I do love a good witbier. So refreshing, spicy and drinkable. Somehow, though, I had never had White Rascal. Spying it on the draft menu at Taco Mac, I decided to correct that omission.
Witbiers seem the perfect libation for spring and summer, and their light quenching character certainly supports that argument. Still, they’re equally welome to me in the fall and winter, too. They’re perfect for the first beer of the day or evening, and in my case White Rascal was the first beer I ordered for an afternoon of football watching at my local Taco Mac.

I was impressed to see they used an original Hoegaarden yeast strain. Hoegaarden White is the classic example of the style.
Avery White Rascal has an alcohol content of 5.6% by volume. I paid $6.50 for a 23-ounce mug at Taco Mac. It runs $10.99 a six-pack in cans, about $1 more than it should I think.
My mug of Avery White Rascal arrived a hazy whitish yellow color with a fair-sized head of creamy foam and appetizing dry coriander in the nose. Taking a siup, the beer is tart wheaty up front and creamy with light spicy coriander, subtle citrus, and a balanced finish.
This is a fair representation of the style but I’d like more coriander and citrus to be frank. 3.5 out of 5 for me. A few days later I enjoyed a Reformation Haddy Witbier that was more pronounced in its spicy glory. Still, Avery White Rascal is a beer I would drink again for sure.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
