I wish this beer
wasn't so hard to find. It's brewed by the Bar Harbor Brewing Company, a
small brewery in Bar Harbor, Maine and not wildly distributed. I happen to
visit Maine a few times a year though and grab some of this beer when I go.
It alone is worth the drive.
Cadillac Mountain Stout, like most Bar Harbor beers, is sold in 22 ounce
bottles. This is a wise way to package it, as 12 ounces would just not be
enough of this fantastic brew. The beer has won awards including World
Champion dry stout at the World Beer Championship in 1995. Though their
judgings are rather hit and miss, they got this one dead on the money.
It's a pleasure just to watch this brew form in the glass. I'm pouring into
a 20 ounce imperial pint glass, and the jet black liquid slowly rises up the
glass with a thick, creamy tan head riding to the top of the glass. A whiff
of the nose is packed with licorice, bringing back fond childhood memories
of opening a box of Allsorts. The palate is huge, loaded with roasty
espresso notes, dark bitter chocolate, more licorice, then smoothes out a
bit in the finish where a touch of grassy hops and roasty bitterness balance
out the beer perfectly.
Try it with a slice of devil's food cake smothered in chocolate frosting. A
very wise man (Joe Marjancik) has opined often that stouts are excellent
dessert beers, and I concur wholeheartedly. Cadillac Mountain Stout could
very well be dessert in and of itself.
And remember, try a new beer today, and
drink outside the box.
