Here's a beer
that's rather hard to find, I have yet to see it outside of the state of
Maine. I was in Portland not too long ago and picked up a supply of this
delightful brew. From the label:
"Our brewery is one of the smallest in North America. We hand craft our
beers using only the finest ingredients."
These are the little guys, and little is good. They make some really great,
bottle-conditioned beers and sell them in 22 ounce bottles. This particular
beer is made with fresh ginger root. I like the fact that small breweries
are making non-traditional beers like this one. There are loads of
seasonings out there that taste great in your brew. Variety is, after all,
the spice of life.
The beer pours dark brown in color with a light tan head and a spicy ginger
nose. The palate is lightly sweet malty, almost brown ale like, but the
ginger is the star here. It dominates the brew from start to finish, and
none of the other flavor components really have a chance of competing. That
makes the beer a natural for Chinese food, it's delicious with lo mein,
General Tso's spicy chicken, fried rice, whatever your favorite dish might
be.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
