Now that’s marketing! OK, I
didn’t coin that phrase, but I wish I had. What is marketing, but an attempt
to increase the sales of your product? Nothing wrong with that, after all.
For the large brewers, marketing means all kinds of things: TV and radio
advertising, coasters, table tents, glassware, T-Shirts, you name it. They
can well afford it, and it is an effective tool to increase their sales.
What if you’re the little guy though? Most microbrewers can’t afford to pass
out all of the assorted beeraphenalia that the big guys can. They can’t
advertise as widely either. So what to do? There is one way that the small
brewer can attract the customer’s eye relatively inexpensively, and that is
at the point of sale with packaging. Think about it. When you walk into the
beer store, you can’t taste all of those wonderful brews presented
before you, but you certainly can see them! So it is that the brewer has the
chance to catch your attention with the bottle he packages his beer in.
Beermann’s Beer Werks’ Rip Roarin' Red Ale caught my attention as soon as I
saw it. Now, I didn’t buy this in a store, the bottle was sent to me by
fellow Epinionator and all around great beer guy David Teykaerts, but had I
seen this beauty in the store you can be sure I would have snapped it up
post haste. The bottle is short and barrel shaped with a beautiful red and
gold label sporting two turn-of-the-20th-century looking guys obviously
enjoying their beers. The brewery, located in Roseville California, operates
a brewpub-steakhouse.
Beermann’s Rip Roarin' Red Ale pours to a deep mahogany color with little
head formation and a malty-hoppy nose. The palate is bursting with a firm,
sweet, and caramelly malt body that hints at chocolate. Hops are abundant
and provide notes of olive and citrus along with a slightly bitter finish. This
is an absolutely stunning beer, one I’d love to see available in my area.
I enjoyed this beer tonight with a broiled steak smothered in portabella
mushrooms I had sautéed in butter. Red beer and red meat…..what a combo!
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
