Black Hog Granola Brown Ale

Oh happy Day! My first beer ever from the Black Hog Brewing Company of Oxford, Connecticut. I promise you, if Black Hog Granola Brown Ale is indicative of the general quality of their beers, this will certainly not be my last Black Hog beer. It is a tasty and delicious brown ale with a respectable hop character that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Twenty five years ago (has it really been that long?) beers from the Nutmeg state were no stranger to me. After all, I lived in Rhode Island, right next door. Today, though, living in Georgia, I see them not so much. Half Time beverage to the rescue, though, and thanks to them I got a can of Granola Brown Ale.

From the brewery website:

Before a big pig roast we love to go on a long hike to get the blood flowin’ and our stomachs ready for a serious feast. to keep us going we pack a few bags of crunchy granola. then it came to us! granola brown allows us have the best of both worlds- a refreshing brew with all the wonders of our delicious granola! take this beer on your next hike or hike one up to your lips for a satisfying energy packed libation. don’t want to pair your beer with a hike? try our granola brown with a nutty alpine cheese like springbrook tarentaise, comte or gruyere.

Black Hog Granola Brown Ale has an alcohol content of 5.7% by volume and I paid $4.99 for my pint can from Half Time. Total Wine sells the beer for $11.99 the 4-pack of pint cans in their Norwalk, CT location. My can was stamped CANNED ON 12/13/23.

Black Hog Granola Brown Ale pours to a murky brown color with a fluffy tan head and a soft brown bread nose. Taking a sip, the beer offers up more of that brown bread aroma and flavor. It’s a little cookie-ish (chocolate chip mind you), and a little nutty, too. I get a subtle hint of molasses and then an assertive hop bitterness that intensifies in the finish. It lingers long and dry and earthy.

A very well done American brown and one I would love to drink again.

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
