Smokin'George Smoked Porter
Review Date 3/20/2025 By John Staradumsky
Hey Johnny! It’s your birthday! Gonna party! Like your birthday! It was my birthday, too, March 14th, Pi Day! My 61st birthday to be exact, which was a tad more concerning than turning 60 the year before. That’s because, of course, 61 is the first step on the road to 70. Still, it is better to be 61 than not to reach 61, even more so when you’re 61 with a beer in hand.
I had a beer in hand. My daughter, Jess, and her Chris were taking me on a pub crawl, and our first stop was the Brick Store Pub in Decatur, where I was enjoying a Bluejacket Smokin’ George Smoked Porter on cask. This was my first beer of the day and of course it was, because hello, smoked beer and hello, on cask.
It was also my very first beer from DC’s Blue Jacket brewery. Welcome to Georgia Bluejacket!
Bluejacket says:
SMOKIN’ GEORGE smoked porter (moor collab.) brewed w/ house-smoked malt from hi-fi bbq, notes of chocolate & espresso, w/ warming hints of smoke & campfire.
Bluejacket Smokin’ George Smoked Porter has an alcohol content of 6% by volume and I paid $8 for a pint glass.
Bluejacket Smokin’ George Smoked Porter on cask pours to a jet-black color with a thin tan filmy head and a nose of chocolate malt and subtle smoke. Taking a sip the beer is smooth and creamy from the cask, with milk chocolate, coffee and a light hint of roast. A subtle oak smokiness emerges. Gentle roasty bitterness and smoke pop at the last.
You could classify this as a Rauchbier, but I think the smoke was subtle enough I am just going to lump it in with my porters. Either way, this was very tasty indeed and delicious with an order of pierogis ($12) pan-fried in brown butter, sauteed onions and pecans.
Glad I tried it?

Would I rebuy it??
