Normally, when I go out for a beer at my local Taco Mac, I check the draft menu to see what I’ll find when I get there. Sometimes, though, a beer is so rare and special that I’ll make a beeline for Taco Mac as soon as I see it on the draft list. Blue Tarp Funk Weisse is just such a beer, for reasons I’ll get into shortly.
Actually, I’ll get into it right now. Blue Tarp Funk Weisse is a Berliner Weisse in style, a style I almost never see here in the states. Aside from the German classic Berliner Kindl Weisse, I’ve only sampled a handful of these, including 1809 Berliner Weisse (also from Germany), Trinity Brewhouse Berliner Weisse, and Oldenberg Weiss all come immediately to mind. That’s out of 4402 different beers I’ve sampled in my 31 years as a beer drinker, too.
Berliner Weisse is a north German specialty brew that is famed for its low alcohol content and refreshing, puckering sourness derives from a secondary lactobacilli fermentation. It’s not an easy beer to make, which may be why we see so few of them, so extra credit to Blue Tarp for brewing up this one.
This is the second Blue Tarp beer I’ve enjoyed for the first time in just a week, so glad to see them being more widely distributed. I certainly hope to see more of their beers featured at my local Taco Mac and in growler shops in the near future.
Blue Tarp Funk Weisse has an alcohol content of 3% by volume, and I paid $5.50 for a full mug pour. I hadn’t planned on stopping at Taco Mac as I said previously, but couldn’t pass on this one. So, I stopped by for lunch and washed down my wings with a Funk Weisse.
The beer arrived a brilliant yellow color with a minimal head and a tart, inviting lemony nose. Taking a sip, I got tart wheat in the palate, citrusy lemon, and a delightful puckering sourness in the finish. Really, this isn’t a complex style, but the tart crackery wheat and overwhelming sourness make it a perfect refresher for a warm late summer day. Then too, the low alcohol content makes it a great choice for drinking this early in the day, something I don’t normally do.
Kudos to Blue Tarp for this amazing brew! I’ll buy it again. And again. And again.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
