Captain Lawrence Dark Chocolate Cherry Imperial Stout

Review Date 6/21/2025 By John Staradumsky

Time for dessert! You get that, too, in every can of Captain Lawrence Dark Cherry Chocolate Imperial Stout. This isn’t a beer to be served with dessert, mind you, it’s a beer to be served as dessert. It’s so rich and chocolatey and even roasty you also get a cup of coffee included. Now what would you pay? But wait! There’s more!

It's a beer, is what’s more, and what’s better than that? Captain Lawrence says:

Layers of dense cocoa flavor enshrine a sweet burst of dark cherries beautifully intertwined with a monumental stout. Satisfy your sweet tooth!

Captain Lawrence Dark Cherry Chocolate Imperial Stout has an alcohol content of 10% by volume and I paid $4.99 fo0r a single at Total Wine, where it was selling for $13.99 the 4-pack of pint cans at the time. My can was stamped CANNED ON 12142023 and I drank it on June 12th of 2025. It did spend some time in my beer fridge before I drank it, but if you can’t age a 10% imperial stout, what can you age?

Captain Lawrence Dark Cherry Chocolate Imperial Stout pours to a jet-black color with a thick creamy tan head and a nose of dark roasty char. Taking a sip, the beer is medium to slightly more in body, and I might like more of that here. The roasty char the nose promised emerges straightaway, complemented by dark bittersweet chocolate, chocolate fudge and bright juicy cherry. Powdered cocoa is present, too, and a subtle hint of licorice. As it warms, a subtle coffee note emerges. The beer finishes quite bitter and gently warming with alcohol.

With a little more body and a little less char this would be perfect, but as it is I would certainly buy it again.

 Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
