Clown Shoes Pecan Pie Porter

Review Date 12/6/2020   By John Staradumsky

It is day 3 of the Clown Shoes 12 Beer of Christmas 12-pack, and today I popped a can of Clown Shoes Pecan Pie Porter. This beer was formerly known as Clown Shoes Genghis Pecan Pecan Pie Porter , though the two are not quite the same beer, for reasons we will get into shortly.

From the Clown Shoes website:

Genghis Pecan rules with an iron fist.  He conquers all that he surveys. But he also is a strategic genius. Genghis plans his meals weeks and weeks ahead so that he arrives at the Clown Shoes Pecan Pie Eating Contest ravenous and ready for another conquest. A seasonal favorite to go alongside a classic dessert, Pecan Pie Porter puts sweet dessert flavors inside a full-bodied and robust porter.

Ingredients, also from the website:

Honey malt, black malt, lactose, and natural pecan flavor

Clown Shoes Pecan Pie Porter has an alcohol content of 8% by volume, which makes it a tad stronger than Ghengis Pecan Pecan Pie Porter which clocked in at 7%. Unlike the first two beers in the sampler, this one is available outside the 12-pack. My can is stamped Best By 01/31/21. I enjoyed it while listening to Christmas music and putting lights up in my yard on a cold December evening. The beer added to the festive mood considerably. I paid $30.99 for my 12-pack, and was distressed when, that same morning, I saw it for $24.99 at Sherlock’s. We live and learn.

Clown Shoes Pecan Pie Porter pours to a dark mahogany color with a fluffy white head and a nose of toasted nuts and molasses. Taking a sip, the beer is full in  body with chocolate chip cookie malty notes, more of the molasses, thick sweet brown sugar, and a hint of the toasted pecans. It is nuttier than I recall Ghengis Pecan being, and my tasting notes for the latter bear that out.

Clown Shoes Pecan Pie Porter really does bring to mind a slice of pecan pie, and I enjoyed the heck out of it. How to style it? I will lump it in with fruit/nut beers for my part, but you could call it a porter if that is your preference. Three beers in, this is the reigning champion of the 12-pack and I would rank the beers I’ve tried as follows, ranking via attention to style and hedonistically:

Clown Shoes Pecan Pie Porter

Double Dry Hopped YeeeHaaw New England Style IPA

Reindeer Games Bavarian Style India Pale Ale

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
