Forget Me Not Black IPA

Review Date 4/23/2021  By John Staradumsky

Oh, Common Space Forget Me Not Black IPA, you are so mad right now! It looks like Common Space has already forgotten you; at least, if you go to the brewery webpage for this beer at Common Space Brewery you get:

Hmmm. Well, OK. Don’t even get me started on Black IPA (IPA is India Pale Ale, and a beer cannot be black and pale at the same time). It’s INDIA DARK ALE. Cascadian Dark? Nope. The style originated in New England, not the Pacific Northwest. Call it what it is: India Dark Ale.

OK, well, now that we’ve gone through all that, maybe we could try the beer there Bruguru, you say? Let’s do just that. Here’s what the brewery says about the beer on the label:

You haven’t forgotten about Black IPA have you? Black IPA wouldn’t like it if you forgot about them. Black IPA wants to be loved and enjoyed by you. It would be best if you remembered Black IPA was always your favorite. Yes, calm now. Drink up. We can be together forever. Just us.

Ingredients from the website:

HOPS: Citra

GRIST: Rahr Pale, Rye malt, Carahell, Sinamar

YEAST: BSI Barbarian Ale

Hey! Where’s the roasted malt? There isn’t any! Instead, Common Space uses Sinamar All-Natural Liquid Malt Color, a liquid extract from Carafa malt. It adds color with less bitterness, which is I am sure meant not to occlude the Citra hops.

Common Space Forget Me Not Black IPA has an alcohol content of 6.66% by volume and I paid $3.79 for my pint can from Craftshack. About the same you pay at the brewery, where they get $15 a 4-pack.

Common Space Forget Me Not Black IPA pours to a dark brownish (not black at all color) with a thick fluffy head and an incongruous nose of roasted malts and citrus (but not grapefruit) fruit. Taking a sip, the beer is light in body with gentle dark roast and the fruity, juicy citrus notes the nose promised. I get orange and tangerine, but they do not work against the subtle roasted notes here like the classic resiny pine grapefruit I want in the style. There isn’t even enough roast here to qualify as an India Dark Ale in my opinion.

Not a beer I would buy again.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
