Originally, I had planned on being in Philly tonight sipping cask ale at the Grey Lodge, one of my favorite places to drink beer. Fate, however, had other ideas on this Friday the Thirteenth. The first obstacle came up a few weeks ago, when my wife was scheduled for an MRI today in New Bedford, Massachusetts. I figured I could bring her to this appointment and still make Philly in time for Friday the Firkenteenth. Unfortunately, I have been sick for a few weeks, and the timing ruled out a Philly trip.
It was too late for Philly, but celebration was definitely in order, so the wife and I jumped in the Saturn and headed to Boston. First stop: Commonwealth, complete with beautiful copper bar and brew kettles as far as the eye can see. As usual, parking in Boston will cost you ($20 total for two parking stops), but to me it's worth it. I asked for the Old Ale, which was on the draft list. I had been looking forward to this one, but sadly it was history. Disappointing, but a pint of Cask Classic Stout made up for that, a wonderful old friend which was fantastic as usual, jet black in color with a rich creamy tan head and a wonderfully impressive roasty nose. The palate was packed with huge espresso notes and a bit of bittersweet chocolate. A big and bold beer, to be sure.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
