Coronado German Chocolate Cake Imperial Stout with Coconut and Chocolate Barrel Aged

Review Date 3/9/2021  By John Staradumsky

German Chocolate Cake! Who doesn’t love German Chocolate Cake? I know I do. In fact, there are few things I like better, but one of those few things is-German Chocolate Cake themed beer! And so it was that when I stumbled upon a bottle of Coronado German Chocolate Cake, I bought it. Of course I did. It was late November of 2019, and I was beer shopping at Greene’s in Atlanta. They had this beer, and it went into my cart. In 2020 on Black Friday, I was at Total Wine in Smyrna, and there again were Coronado special releases for the holiday season-though not the beer I am here to discuss today.

As it tends to do, time went by, and my bottle of Coronado German Chocolate Cake sat in my garage beer fridge. I would regard it as I sorted through my various beers each time I was having a beer, and think to myself “a beer this special really deserves a Coronado glass to enjoy it from.” Make no mistake, this *is* a special beer. The full name on the bottle is Coronado Brewing Co. German Chocolate Cake Imperial Stout Brewed with Coconut & Chocolate Barrel-Aged.

Coronado German Chocolate Cake is part of the brewery’s Coronado Collection, about which they say:

The Coronado Collection is our limited release series of barrel-aged liquid treasures. Only the boldest bars enter the barrels, and after months of aging, they emerge transformed. Enjoy now, or cellar for years to come.

And about the beer they say:

Rich espresso and chocolate notes from the beer meld with sweet toasted coconut, before aging for several months in fresh bourbon barrels. The barrels impart the beer with additional hints of coconut and vanilla for a new take on this classic American dessert.

Coronado German Chocolate Cake has an alcohol content of 9% by volume and Total Wine sells it for $15.99 a bottle. I cannot recall what I paid but it was a few bucks less than at least, as Green’s almost always beats Total Wine prices. In early March of 2021, I finally got that Coronado beer glass. So now you know why I’m here.

Coronado Brewing Co. German Chocolate Cake Imperial Stout Brewed with Coconut & Chocolate Barrel-Aged pours to a jet-black color with a light creamy tan head and a soft nose of toasted coconut and chocolate. Taking a sip, the beer is full in body, smooth and chocolaty with raisin and hints of toasted coconut. The beer is rich and warming and boozy and while it does not fully remind me of German Chocolate Cake (because of the barrel aging), it is quite tasty. As it warms the toasted coconut comes through more fully, and the beer adds woody and nutty notes; rounded out with the chocolate, the German Chocolate Cake theme emerges-albeit one soaked with bourbon.

Very delightful indeed! I will be on the hunt for more of this delicious beer. You should be, too.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
