Get Comfortable Belgian Style IPA

Review Date 3/16/2020   By John Staradumsky

There it was! Creature Comforts Allagash Get Comfortable Belgian Style IPA stacked in a display at Target. I passed on this when I first saw it because at $15.19 a 4-pack it was pricey, and I am trying to reduce my beer stash. Yes, I know. What a problem to have. I just knew I was going to get some though, and when corona virus came along and forced us to cancel our vacation trip to New Orleans, I splurged and bought a 4-pack. I then learned the proceeds go to feed the hungry and homeless so hey, the price suddenly didn’t seem so bad.

Creature Comforts says:

We collaborated with Allagash Brewing Co. to create an IPA that leans into Allagash’s expertise in brewing Belgian-style beers—as well as highlighting a shared love of hops. This juicy, fruity Belgian-style IPA (6.6%) features Topaz and Comet hops in addition to local wheat sourced from both breweries’ communities.

Get Comfortable 2020 is a year-round campaign with a pronounced season of emphasis taking place February 5 through April 15, during which we will donate 100-percent of our Wednesday “community day” profits towards the Get Comfortable fund. In addition to the profits from the collaborative beer going towards the fund, we also have Get Comfortable merchandise and work alongside local businesses to generate additional profits for the fund.

Creature Comforts brews this collaboration annually with a different brewer. This is the first time I have seen the beer, and what better brewery to pair with than Allagash? This Portland, Maine brewing icon has been a favorite of mine since the 90s.

Creature Comforts Allagash Get Comfortable Belgian Style IPA pours to a pale-yellow color with a thick fluffy white head and a citrusy, spicy clove and coriander nose. Taking a sip, the beer is crisp wheaty up front with a subtle maltiness beneath. The spicy clove and coriander notes return in the palate along with vibrant lemony citrus and white pepper. The whole affair finishes tart wheaty and very dry spicy.

This is exceptional in my book, a solid 5-star beer. To my taste, it’s more like a white IPA than a Belgian Pale Ale. However you peg it, it’s a beer that should not be missed, and I’m glad I didn’t.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
