Doesn’t Creature Comforts Brewing of Athens, Georgia already have a coffee version of their Reclaimed Rye Ale? They do: Creature Comforts Reclaimed Rise Ale, which is as the brewery describes it is Reclaimed Rye with Fazenda Ambietal Fortaleza coffee, a direct trade organic Brazilian coffee provided by 1000 Faces of Athens, GA. Now, Creature Comforts rolls out a new version of Reclaimed Rye, again made with coffee but a different varietal: Creature Comforts Reko Reclaimed Rye Ale.
Here’s what Creature Comforts says about Reko Reclaimed Rye:
A well balanced blend of our Reclaimed Rye with Reko coffee, an Ethiopian coffee from Reko Washing Station acquired through 1000faces of Athens, GA. Our balanced approach to blending allows the rye malt and French oak of our Reclaimed Rye to maintain it's well-rounded body and delicate undertones of toasted bread, spice, and subtle vanilla while successfully intermingling with the melon-flower top notes and surprisingly flavorful Reko Coffee.
So kind of the same thing as Reclaimed Rise, just with a different blend of coffee. Creature Comforts Reko Reclaimed Rye Ale has an alcohol content of 5.5% by volume. I believe it is a draft only offering. I paid $6.25 for a 23-ounce mug at Taco Mac.
My mug of Creature Comforts Reko Reclaimed Rye Ale arrived a bright ruby color with a medium head of creamy foam and gentle notes of spicy rye and coffee in the nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a firm smooth body with spicy rye and oh so soft woody notes, subtle roasty coffee and a dry finish.
This is a very tasty rye ale to be sure, but the coffee does not strike me as robust here as it did in Reclaimed Rise. I might buy Reko Reclaimed Rye Again, but of the two I prefer the Reclaimed Rise.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
