The Duck Rabbit Milk Stout
Review Date 5/25/2024 By John Staradumsky
Now get this: I’ve never reviewed The Duck Rabbit Milk Stout. Mind you, I’ve had the beer many times, and always enjoyed it. Until today, though, I never jotted down my thoughts on it. It’s just one of those things, I guess. Let’s fix this now.
The Duck Rabbit makes some mighty fine beers indeed, and they sure do make a mean Milk Stout. This might just be one of my favorite examples of the style. Smooth, creamy, and rich with extra body from the lactose. Before the modern trend of weirdo stouts with lactose and any dessert you can think of added, there were milk stouts. Before “milk shake IPAs” (not a huge fan myself), there were milk stouts. And there still are. Just ask The Duck Rabbit.
They say:
The Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout is a traditional full-bodied stout brewed with lactose (milk sugar). Because lactose is unfermentable by brewer’s yeast, it remains in the beer. The subtle sweetness and fullness of flavor imparted by this sugar balances the sharpness of the highly roasted grains that give this delicious beer its black color. All year long, Milk Stout is our number one selling beer!
The Duck Rabbit Milk Stout has an alcohol content of 5.7% by volume and I paid $10.99 for a six-pack at Hickory Liquor and Wine here in Canton. A very reasonable price these days. My bottles are notched as best by 6/23, but I did not let that stop me as this store constantly refrigerates their beer. My beer was in excellent condition.
The Duck Rabbit Milk Stout pours to a jet black color with a thick creamy tan head and a nose of roast and chocolate. Taking a sip, the beer is smooth and creamy malty up front. Medium in body, it hints at chocolate pudding with the skins on just like your mom used to make on the stove, topped with whipped cream. Finishes with a delightful roasted malt/barley bitterness.
Smooth, creamy, chocolaty, delicious. I think I need to go get another six-pack. You should, too.
Glad I tried it?
