Welcome, Eagle Creek Brewing of Statesboro, Georgia, to Bruguru.com! You arrive at entry 36 on my list of Georgia breweries past and present with entries on the site. Georgia has more than 36 breweries, brewpubs and contract brewers, of course. We have to subtract Dogwood, Friends, and Old Savanah from the list of active brewers, of course, because they are sadly defunct, which leaves us 36. But then we can add in the two extra locations for Five Seasons, Copper Creek Brewpub in Athens, Gordon Biersch in downtown Atlanta, and Anheuser Busch as a few more I’ve visited and we’re now at 38. Add in the few newer breweries that have just popped up and we now have over 40 breweries in Georgia today, with that number continuing to grow.
Let’s get back to Eagle Creek, though. They’re located about 60 miles from Savannah and opened in 2013. I’ve only recently begun to see their beer appear in cans, and tonight I’m trying their Grass Roots Lemon Lime Hefeweizen. This beer is sold year-round and I enjoyed it in early January. Here’s what the brewery says about it on their website:
An authentic German-Style Hefeweizen with a twist. We use all natural Mayer Lemons & Key Lime Juice along with Germany’s finest wheat and noble hops. Perfectly balanced, incredibly drinkable
Ingredients from the website:
MALT Pilsner, Wheat
HOPS German Tradition
YEAST German Hefeweizen Yeast
ADJUNCTS Natural Mayer Lemon & Key Lime Juice
Eagle Creek Grass Roots Lemon Lime Hefeweizen has an alcohol content of 6% by volume with 20 IBUs. I paid $8.99 for a six-pack of cans at Total Wine, quite reasonable.
Eagle Creek Grass Roots Lemon Lime Hefeweizen pours to a brilliant orange amber color with a thick spritzy, short-lived head and a surprisingly Germanic clovey banana nose. I say surprising because not as much citrus pokes through as I expected, at least not for a beer that touts itself as Lemon Lime Hefeweizen. Taking a sip, the beer has some tart wheat underneath and a hint of caramel. The very tart lemon and lime flavors increase in intensity into the finish, but the spicy clove is still readily apparent and the beer finishes citric tart and dry.
I’m impressed! This is a very refreshing hefeweizen perfect for hot Georgia weather, and in convenient six-pack cans its portable and potable. Judged for what they’re trying to deliver here (a Bavarian hefeweizen with a pinch of lemon and lime), I give this one high marks, and I’ll definitely be buying it again.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
