Here’s the last of the Edmund’s Oast beers I picked up in Charleston: Edmund’s Oast Sour Blackberry Raspberry. I enjoyed a taster at the brewery, bought a crowler there, and then picked up a few singles of their beer at Total Wine before leaving Charleston.
Edmund’s Oast describes their Sour Black Raspberry as American sour ale brewed with blackberry and raspberry. You can call this a “sour” or a fruit beer, but to me it’s a fruit beer that’s sour.
The brewery says on their website:
Our series of fruited American Sour Ales come from a love of fresh fruit flavors combined with mouth-watering acidity. We take the same golden sour base beer and re-ferment it with different fruit combinations. Blackberry and raspberry , while distinctive, have highly complementary flavors. Explosive fruit notes erupt from the glass, and one is left with a quenched thirst, yet thirsty for more.
Ingredients from the website:
Malts 2-Row, Acidulated, Carapils
Other Ingredients Blackberry, Raspberry
Edmund’s Oast Sour Blackberry Raspberry has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume. It was selling for $12.99 a 4-pack of pint cans.
Edmund’s Oast Sour Blackberry Raspberry pours to a bright purple color with a thick fizzy short lived head and a tart fresh berry nose. Taking a sip, the beer is very tart from the outset with a light suggestion of wheat with lots more fruit. The bright raspberry and the hearty blackberry take turns on the palate until the beer finishes sour and refreshing, and there are green leafy notes as well like the leaves on the vine.
Tasty and perfect on a hot August night.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
