Outside beer! Yay! I was having my first outside beer of the year and it was only March 5th. Rummaging through my hallway DBR (Dedicated Beer Refrigerator) I found a can of Berliner Geschichte Bock that I bought in Helen the previous October. This is brewed by Eibauer brewery and I thought it was their Eibauer Dunkler Bock under another label. It is not; Berliner Geschichte Bock is a Maibock.

This is the second Berliner Geschichte beer I have sampled, their Pilsner being the first. That beer was tasty, if not exceptional. Eibauer does not have any information on Berliner Geschichte beers on their website but from the can I can tell you a few things.

The beer has an alcohol content of 6.7% by volume and is brewed by Eibauer in Eibau, Germany. It is imported by Doyna, LTD of Linden, New Jersey. Ny can has no freshness dating. There is a QR code on the can, which if scanned takes you to Eibauer’s Instagram page. I paid $3.99 for my single half liter can at Betty’s Country Store in Helen. Total Wine sells this for $11.99 a 4-pack of the same size cans in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

Eibauer Berliner Geschichte Bock pours to a bright golden brown color with a thick fluffy white head and a nose of soft fresh toasted malts. Taking a sip, the beer is slightly toasty nutty and hints at candy sugar and a hint of caramel. There is a subtle cooked corn character that I usually get in a Maibock, and it finishes with a balancing but not aggressive grassy hop bitterness. I would like a little more hop bitterness here, as the beer starts sweet up front and that is balanced, but again the hops are not overly assertive.

Still, I very much enjoyed this and the caramel here, more than is usually found in the style, adds an interesting and unique element. It was perfect for sipping on a warm March evening, and I would certainly buy it again.

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
