Last Thursday night, I was enjoying a mug of 10 Barrel Pray for Snow from Portland, Oregon at my local Taco Mac here in Canton. Tonight, it’s a bit further north to Seattle and an equally delicious serving of Elysian Space Dust IPA. Both Elysian and 10 Barrel share the spotlight as breweries of the month for January, and that means each Thursday night patrons get a delicious beer and a free logo glass.
Elysian Space Dust is a double/imperial IPA, and it’s also brewed in the classic Pacific Northwest tradition of piney/citrusy India Pale Ale with a solid malt backbone. No thin, fruit loopy, namby pamby modern IPA here, folks. Elysian calls this A Totally Nebular IPA; one sip and you’ll see why.
Ingredients from the website:
MALTS: Great Western premium two-row, c-15 and Dextra-pils
HOPS: Chinook, Citra and Amarillo
Elysian says:
The hopping is pure starglow energy, with Chinook to bitter and late and dry additions of Citra and Amarillo.
Elysian Space Dust IPA has an alcohol content of 8.2% by volume with 73 IBUs. I paid $6.25 for a 20-ounce mug at Taco Mac (with a free Elysian glass) and it sells for $11.99 a six-pack at Total Wine.
My mug of Elysian Space Dust IPA arrived a rich orange in color with a thick creamy head of foam and a nose exploding with grapefruit and resiny pine. Taking a sip, the beer has a firm caramel maltines up front followed by juicy grapefruit flesh and bitter peel, strong resin and pine, and a long dry lingering bitter finish.
A simply fantastic double IPA, resiny and piney just the way I like them! I’ll be enjoying Space Dust again for sure. Why don’t you?
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
