Eventide. Just what the heck is eventide, you ask? Obviously, it has to do with beer, which is why I’m writing about it, and it does, since the Eventide Brewing Company opened its 5 barrel brewhouse in Atlanta last year. As far as the name, here’s what it refers to as the brewery explains it:
e·ven·tide /ˈēvənˌtīd/ (Noun) Eventide is an old English term meaning “evening” or “twilight”. For us it represents the time of day that anything is possible and everything is exactly as you want it to be.
Eventide is the perfect time to have a beer, I think. And why not a beer from Eventide brewery, perhaps an Eventide Kolsch? Eventide Kolsch is the second beer I’ve enjoyed from these folks, after Eventide Pale Ale, and I think I like this one better than I did that one. In any case, these are the only two beers they seem to make at the present time.
Kolsch is an underrated style, I think, a perfect refresher well suited for the first beer of the night. Classically, it’s a malty German ale with light fruit and grassy hops in the finish. To be called a Kolsch, the beer must be brewed in Koln, Germany (aka cologne), so Eventide Kolsch is actually a Kolsch-style ale. It has an alcohol content of 5.3% by volume and I enjoyed a 20 ounce mug of it at Taco Mac for a reasonable $5.25.
Eventide Kolsch pours to a pale golden color with a faint soft fruitiness in the nose and a medium sized head of tightly packed bubbles. Taking a sip, the beer has a fresh crisp biscuit malt in the palate, underlined with soft luscious notes of apple and pear fruit. There’s a gentle hint of grassy hops at the last.
I really love the crisp, biscuity maltiness of this beer and the smooth drinkability here. Almost perfect I think, as Kolsches go, though needs a bit more hops to balance the slightly sweet finish. Otherwise, delightful, and a beer I’ll certainly look for again.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
