Heidi Bavarian Hefeweizen

Review Date 2/14/2024  By John Staradumsky

The way I review beers can be very strange, indeed. A week and a half ago, I was sitting at Taco Mac enjoying 6 Bridges Silent Accord Milk Stout with Coconut when I realized I had never reviewed it. Actually, I had never reviewed any 6 Bridges before, including their wonderful Feierabend Marzen, despite having enjoyed both it and the Silent Accord in the past. Fortunately, I had taken tasting notes, being my usual punctilious self in doing so, and rectified my egregious omission.

Ok now, you are asking yourself at this point, Bruguru, you guru of brew you, what in the actual hell does any of this have to do with Heidi Bavarian Hefeweizen from California’s Five Threads Brewing? Well you see, I drank my can of Heidi right after my can of Feierabend, so when I went back to September of 2021 to get my photo of Feierabend off my OneDrive, I saw photos of Heidi-and realized I had not reviewed that either. So here we are and, as I told you, the way I review beers can be very strange, indeed.

While visiting toe Five Threads website to get information on Heidi, I sadly noticed the following:

It is with heavy heart that I announce that after 6 hard fought years, Five Threads Brewery is closing permanently. Unfortunately we have not been able to scale up our sales fast enough to cover rising expenses and we find ourselves at the end of our funds.

This is so sad indeed, because if Heidi Bavarian Hefeweizen was indicative of the quality of their beers, we have lost a real gem. I am happy I tried this beer, and took tasting notes and can record the brew for future beer historians.

From the label:

Back by popular demand, we’ve opened the vault to bring you the next in our lineup of legacy beers: Our Bavarian style Hefeweizen “Heidi.”

Heidi is crisp, smooth, and quenching. Along with a subtle bread dough background we elicit traditional hints of apple, banana and clove using a traditional Bavarian ale yeast and special temperature profiles during fermentation.

Heidi is equally at home in the beer halls of Germany or sitting with you on your front porch swing.

Five Threads Heidi Bavarian Hefeweizen has an alcohol content of 5% by volume and I paid $3.13 for my can from Craftshack in August of 2021. I drank it one month later. I now have a dog named Heidi. I did not when I drank this beer. She is not named for the beer.

Five Threads Heidi Bavarian Hefeweizen pours to a cloudy yellow-white color with a thick fluffy white head and a tart wheaty nose spiked with clove and banana. Of course I decanted two thirds of the can, swirled about the remainder, then poured the last into my glass. Taking a sip, the beer is tart wheaty, crackery, studded with clove and fruity with banana, finishes tart wheaty and refreshing. Hard to tell it did not come from Bavaria!

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
