Here’s a Belgian style witbier with a difference: Florida Beer Key West Southernmost Wheat. Belgian Witbier is a classic style of wheat beer that is traditionally brewed with Curaco orange peel and coriander. Florida Beer Company changes things up just a bit by replacing the orange peel with key lime.
The results? A refreshing twist perfect for hot southern (or southernmost) weather. Florida beer company says about Southernmost Wheat on their website:
Specifically crafted in the style of a Belgian witbier. Aromas of coriander and a burst of keylime intertwine with a hint of banana imparted from our special Belgian yeast. 100% Cascade hops are used for a Florida citrus beer. Pairs well with lighter fare, salads, rock shrimp ceviche, beer battered mahi tacos and key lime pie. Key West was recently awarded the 2016 Gold Medal in the U.S. Open Beer Championships. Other awards include the 2012 and 2009 Bronze Medal in the Best Florida Beer Championships, and the 2010 and Bronze Medal in the U.S. Open Beer Championships.
Florida Beer Key West Southernmost Wheat has an alcohol content of 5% by volume with 20 IBUs. Total Wine sells it for $8.99 a six-pack, not a bad price at all. The beer is named for the point in Key West that is the southernmost point in the continental united states. There is a marker there which you can se on the label.
Florida Beer Key West Southernmost Wheat pours to a cloudy yellow color with a thick head of foam and a spicy citrus and coriander nose. Taking a sip, the beer is a little tart wheaty up front with a hint of banana from the yeast (unusual in a witbier), a little coriander and more citrus: a hint of bitter lime peel but more citrusy lime fruit. It finishes tart wheaty and dry with spice. Tasty and different!
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
