Hadn’t I had Founders Oatmeal Stout before? I thought I had, and worse yet, I thought I had had it in the bottle. I wasn’t confusing it with Founders Breakfast Stout; oh no I wasn’t, I knew they were two different beers. But there I was sitting at the bar at Taco Mac enjoying a coffeeish, creamy mug when I found out that no, indeed, I had never had this beer.
I had posted a picture up in that legendary facebook beer group, Honest Craft Beer Reviews, when our own Zachery Palmer reminded me this is a draft only beer. To be sure, I knew this was a nitro tap draft, but I didn’t know that was the only way this beer was sold.
Well, now I do, and I’ve had it. Do you want to know more? Here’s what Founders says about their Oatmeal Stout:
A Founders take on a classic style, brewed with a generous amount of flaked oats, chocolate malt, roasted barley and a healthy helping of Nugget hops, Founders Oatmeal Stout is nitrogen-infused to give it an extra smooth and creamy mouthfeel. An attractive cascade effect gives this beer its forthright visual appeal—and the body and clean flavor delivers on that initial promise.
How much was it? I didn’t ask, since I knew it would be gone pretty quickly (it had been on tap at my Canton Taco Mac before but sold out in a few scant days, I ordered it. Later I got the bill: $7.75 for a full 20 ounce mug. Pretty pricey for a 4.5% beer, but what the heck. We live but once.
My
mug of Founders Oatmeal Stout on nitro pour arrived a jet black color
with an oh-so creamy tan head and a soft chocolaty nose. Taking a sip, this
beer is sinfully smooth with a silky texture from the oats exponentiated by
the nitro. Dark bittersweet chocolate, coffee and roasted chicory all come
through, a hint of caramel, and harsh roasted barley especially in the
finish. A bit of minty hop aroma is present at the last, in that long dry
roasty bitter finish. This is great folks!
This is one damned good beer, pricey yes but worth it. It’s like morning coffee and oatmeal all in one, like breakfast in a glass. A rare find from what I gather, so if you happen to see it on tap near you, or even far from you, don’t miss it.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
