I still remember my first trip, fated to be my only one, to the Old Wyndham Brewery in tiny Willimantic, Connecticut. The brewery was housed in an old mill complex that seemed to be coming apart and ready for the wreckers ball, but with a little work managed nicely to hold a small brewery and an accompanying office. The founder and brewer was a very nice guy indeed, proud to show us his operation and provide a logo pint glass as a souvenir. It's a real shame that the company went under.
If memory serves, Old Wyndham brewed up three different beers and contract produced a third, Buffalo Bill's Pumpkin Ale. There beers were available in Connecticut in bottles and on draft, and in a gesture of local solidarity were served with pride at Willimantic's Main Street Brewery as guest taps.
My thoughts on Frog and Hound Pub Ale were as follows:
It's a brown ale by style, and a very interesting one, sort of a mid point between the sweetish English examples of the style and the hoppy American ones. This is a very malty, sweetish brew with heavy caramel notes, subtle hints of raisin and a bock-like chewiness to it. It's not extremely hoppy, but it is well balanced and slightly bitter in the finish. Extremely enjoyable I wrote at the time, though obviously this beer is no longer available.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
