Good People beers are in Georgia! That’s a very welcome development. I’ve been a fan of this Birmingham, Alabama since I first picked up their beers in Tennessee a year ago. Good People Coffee Oatmeal Stout amazed me, as did a few of their other brews. Today I’m here to tell you about another fine entry in their lineup, Good People Bearded Lady American Wheat Ale. Just the right beer for hot southern weather, whether in Georgia or Alabama.
The beer scene in Alabama seems to be ramping up lately, at least if you gauge it by breweries expanding their footprint into neighboring Georgia. Which is how I’m measuring it today. Both Good People and Fairhope Brewing have started selling their beer here. We’re happy about that, too.
From the can label:
This light-bodied ale marries a hint of hops with a whisker of tartness for a subtle citrus flavor. Silky smooth and refreshing, it’s the perfect tonic for 5 o’clock shadows, seven days a week.
Ingredients from the website:
Hops: Magnum, Falconer’s Flight
Malts: 2-Row and Wheat
Yeast: California Ale OG: 1.041
Good People Bearded Lady American Wheat Ale has an alcohol content of 4.2% by volume with 13 IBUs. It runs $9.99 a six-pack at Total Wine.
Good People Bearded Lady American Wheat Ale pours to a cloudy white yellow color with a medium head of short lived foam and a tart wheaty and spicy hop nose. Taking a sip, the beer is wonderfully tart crackery-wheaty, then surprisingly bitter for just 13 IBUs with a pronounced grassy, sharply bitter hoppy finish. This isn’t your average American wheat, it’s an American wheat on steroids with tons of wheaty and hop notes.
Beers like this are often judged outside of style by today’s beer geeks, but if you take this as an example of the American Wheat style which is meant to be tart and refreshing and mostly clean of esters, then this is a very good one. I really enjoyed it, and I can tell you from experience that you just haven’t lived until you’ve had a Bearded Lady.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
