Experimental hop alert! Great Lakes Hop by Numbers IPA is brewed with an experimental hop. That hop doesn’t have a name yet (it’s still experimental dontcha know) but it does have a number: 07270. Experimental hop 07270. I don’t know much about this variety yet, but if you brew you can buy it at hoptech.com by clicking here. I get no commission folks, just trying to help out my homebrewer readers.
Here’s what they say about the hop:
Hopsteiner Experimental hop 07270, 17%
This hop is big and bold, piney, orange, dank. We have not played with it yet but it smells amazing!
Back to Great Lakes Hop by Numbers IPA. Great Lakes has lots of IPAs these days, regular IPAs, double IPAs, Rye IPAs-you name it. Commodore Perry IPA is their most longstanding IPA (I believe); at any rate I enjoyed it as far back as the 90s. Great Lakes beers are still not sold in Georgia, but I have a mule in Ohio named Dave Coulter that keeps me supplied.
From the label:
Our pub brewer found his muse in experimental hop 07270’s bright tangerine aromas, then brushed his IPA’s canvas with shades of citrusy Cascade and piney Simcoe hops.
Great Lakes Hop by Numbers IPA has an alcohol content of 7.2% by volume with 80 IBUs. My bottle has a best by date of 05/19/2016; I drank it out on my patio on April 17th.
Great Lakes Hop by Numbers IPA pours to a deep orange amber color with a thick pillowy head of foam and a bright lemon citrus and resin nose. Taking a sip, the beer has firm caramel malt up front followed by bright citrus grapefruit and piney resin. The finish is very long, very dry and very bitter. Folks, I love it! Hop by numbers is full of the classic citrus and resin notes I love in an IPA, and I think the experimental hop here adds a bit of lemony aroma.
If you can buy Great Lakes Hop by Numbers IPA in your area, I’d advise you to do so, post haste. Before they go and give that new hop a name. If I get to suggest, I’d call it Hop of Numbers. And there you go.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
