Have you heard the news? Green Flash Brewing of San Diego, California is pulling out of 32 states. That’s a commentary on today’s beer business, which tends to favor small. Local brewers over larger one with multi-state distribution. In any case, Georgia is one of the states that will be losing Green Flash beers, although they will still be sold in nearby North Carolina.
Anyway, I was headed to Taco
Mac here in Canton to watch the AFC Championship game and noticed Green
Flash GFB Blonde Ale on tap. I figured I should grab a mug and get it while
it lasts. This is in no way Green Flash’s most exciting beer, and the
brewery will tell you quite frankly it is meant to be an accessible Blonde
Ale.
GFB is a light, refreshing, crushable blonde ale with hints of honey and
orange peel complemented by a mellow malt character. At 4.8%, it is expertly
crafted to enhance any occasion. Find it on tap and on shelves now.
Green Flash GSB Blonde Ale ran me $6 for a 23-ounce mug at Taco Mac and sells for $10.99 a six-pack in bottles at Total Wine.
My mug of Green Flash GFB Blonde Ale arrived a pale blonde color with a medium head of fizzy foam and a soft fruit and light malt aroma. Taking a sip, the beer is light bodied with more of the same in the palate (perhaps the malt comes forward as a tad biscuity) and a gently bitter finish.
Here’s my problem with Green
Flash GFB Blonde Ale: there are plenty of blonde ales out there, and this
one is unremarkable from many. I understand the style is meant to be
inoffensive and unassuming, and that is the case here, and stylistically I
would give this a 4. To be fair, I have no problem with the draft price, but
the problem is that there are so many beers that are very similar for $2 to
$3 less a six-pack that I really see no reason why I would buy this again.
Even if I could.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
