Good news GOMBies! Grumpy Old Men Hell’s Holler Porter is now in cans. For those of you that don’t know what a GOMBie is, that would be a fan of Grumpy Old Men Brewing of Blue Ridge, Georgia. Count me amongst their numbers. Anyway, Hell’s Holler Porter joined the canned lineup just this September, joining Aska Pale Ale and Grasshoppa Imperial IPA.
Now all that said, I have yet to see a six-pack of Hell’s Holler Porter on store shelves. In point of fact, I had never even tried it before I saw it at Stout’s Growlers on a fine Thursday evening. Being a GOMBie, I was all over it, and now I’m here to tell you about it.
Grumpy Old Men Hell’s Holler Porter is a strong robust porter at 7% by volume. Those of you in the know will be aware the other substyle of porter is brown porter. I paid $8.50 for a Crowler at Stout’s (plus 50 cents for the can).
Grumpy Old Men Hell’s Holler Porter pours to a jet-black color with a thick creamy head and a rich roast nose. The palate is medium in body with a huge dark roastiness, bittersweet chocolate and a dry roasty bitter finish.
This is an excellent robust porter, one of the best I've had in quite some time. It’s smooth and drinkable yet bursting with roasty goodness all the way into the finish. Not to be missed, if you can find it.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
