Grünbacher Altweisse Gold

Review Date12/20/2025 By John Staradumsky
One of things I love so much about the German beer advent calendars I get from Costco (first from Kalea and now from Webster Barnes) are all of the new German breweries to which I am introduced. Of course, when i say new, I mean new to me, since German breweries tend to date back centuries. This is the case with the Grünbacher brewery of Bockhorn, Bavaria and their Grünbacher Altweisse Gold, a Hefeweizen from this brewery that specializes in wheat beers.
The Webster Barnes website for the 2025 box says this about the brewery:
Located just outside Munich, opened in 1787 by Benno Scharl, who took over the management dilapidated brewery under the direction of the Count Seinsheim. The brewery has changed hands, but remains true to their wheat beer recipes.
Grünbach says this about the beer:
Der Klassiker aus Grünbach.
Hell golden - mit Hefe und Kohlensäure fein abgestimmt.
Überzeugend durch seine Frische.
Ein echter Genuss für jeden Weissbier-Freund.
Which means if you don't speak German:
Bright
golden - finely balanced with yeast and carbonation.
Convincing with its freshness.
A real treat for every wheat beer lover.
Grünbacher Altweisse Gold has an alcohol content of 5.3% by volume with 12 IBUs and I paid $2.50 for it ($59.95 for the collection divided by 24). That is an amazing deal. My can was stamped

Grünbacher Altweisse Gold pours to a cloudy yellow orange color with a thick fluffy white head and a nose of rich banana and clove. I roused the yeast and poured this into my glass, as I always do with this style. Taking a sip, the beer is light to medium in body, just a tad lighter than I expect, but only a tad. It does have the crackery wheat I am looking for, and quickly explodes with flavor: clove, banana, a hint of bubble gum. It’s a tad peppery and finishes tart wheaty and oh so refreshing. I would definitely buy this beer again.
Other beers in this collection:
Georg Rittmayer Hausbrauerbier
Nova Cella Schlaubetaler Landbier
Glad I tried it?
