Surprise! Harpoon Summer Beer is a Kolsch this year.
Things are going full tilt at Mass Bay. Production is at near capacity, and
brewing operations are running pretty much 24 hours a day. Rumors are in the
air that the company may be interested in purchasing Catamount's
brewing facilities. They've done this with careful marketing and a great variety of beers that
will
please the discriminate palate and at the same time appeal to the newcomer
to
the beer scene.
On the lighter side of beers they produce is this year's summer brew, brewed
in the Kolsch style. This is a light golden colored brew with a good head
formation and a soft malty nose. The palate is fairly clean and malty, like
chewing a handful of crisp pale malt. It's a clean beer, and might be
improved with a touch of fruitiness, but as it stands the delicate malt
character makes it a good quenching summer brew, which is what it is
intended to be. The finish is balanced but not hoppy to be sure. A clean,
refreshing summer ale from Harpoon.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
