Harpoon sure makes a lot of UFO beers. That’s a good thing, of course, because if beer geeks admire anything, it’s variety. Some beer geeks proudly call themselves “tickers” (I am most assuredly not a ticker), and their goal is to try as many beers as possible without repeating them. I ask you, what’s the point of that? We try so many beers to find one we enjoy, and then to say I can’t enjoy it again? Insanity.
That said, Harpoon sure makes a lot of UFO beers. Originally, Harpoon UFO was their hefeweizen, with UFO standing for UnFiltered Offering. That one was released at least 15 years ago; maybe more. Since then, Harpoon has been on a mission. There’s a UFO Big Squeeze Shandy made with citrus, one with cranberries, one with huckleberries, one with raspberries and, of course, one with pumpkins. Love Georgia peaches? There’s a UFO for that. How about gingerbread or vanilla infused coffee? Harpoon has you covered.
Today, though, we’re visiting tropical island flavor with Harpoon UFO Pineapple. The beer has an alcohol content of 5.2% by volume and you can get it for $9.49 a six-pack at Target.
Harpoon says:
Golden, juicy, tropical. No matter the season, UFO Pineapple makes it the perfect time to get your luau on. It’s island time!
I say:
Harpoon UFO Pineapple pours to a hazy yellow color (a lot like pineapple juice) with a thick fluffy head and a juicy fruity pineapple nose. Taking a sip, the beer is a little wheaty up front but mostly juicy, it’s a lot like drinking fresh pineapple juice. It finishes slightly sweet and again fruity. I like pineapple a lot, so enjoyed it, but I think this is more like juice than beer. It’s not something I could drink a lot of in one sitting, it’s just too sweet for my taste.
All in all, a little too fruit juicy and not enough beery. That said, thanks to my daughter Jess for a can. I enjoyed watching football and so, as always, go Pats!
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
