Herrnbrau Tradition Festbier

Review Date 1/13/2016  By John Staradumsky

For Christmas of 2015, my wife bought me a really cool present: BeerAdvent Calendar 2015 from Kalea. Intruth, my wife got me a lot of nice presents (she’s the best wife ever), but the nice thing about the Beer Advent Calendar is you get it early. You have to, since it’s comprised of 24 different imported German beers in a box with little doors that you open, one per day from December 1st through December 24th. All of the beers are listed on the side of the carton, however, so be careful not to look and spoil the daily surprises!

I love German beer more than beer from any other country on Earth, so this was definitely right up my alley. My one criticism of the calendar is there are no bocks or doppelbocks (not fair!), but otherwise it’s just an amazing way to sample 24 German beers I’ve never seen before. I got mine a Costco here in Georgia and paid $59.95 for the box. That might sound steep, but when you distribute that price over 24 different half liter cans, it only works out to $2.50 per can. Not a bad deal at all looked at that way.

Day 3 of the German Beer Advent Calendar brings us a fine Helles Festbier from the Herrnbrau Brauerei of Ingolstadt in Bavaria. Many of the breweries and beers in the German Beer Advent Calendar are new for me. While Herrnbrau Tradition Bayerisches Festbier is new to me, the brewery is not. Herrnbrau beers have been sold in Georgia since at least 2002, when I picked up a bottle of their Radler.

Herrnbrau is a relative newcomer to the German brewing scene, claiming 125 years of brewing heritage. As they say on their website, they stand firmly for Germaqn brewing art and fine quality beer. This Festbier is a great example of their pride in brewing.

They say of Tradition Festbier on their website:

Ein echtes Festbier - das vollmundige HERRNBRÄU Tradition.

Alljährlich gebraut zum Jahrestag des 1516 in Ingolstadt verkündeten weltberühmten Bayerischen Reinheitsgebotes. Nach altüberliefertem Braurezept mit ausgesuchten Zutaten ist es edel-aromatisch und süß im Antrunk.

Which means:

A real Festbier - the full-bodied HERRNBRÄU tradition.

Brewed every year on the anniversary of the world-famous Bavarian purity law announced in Ingolstadt in 1516. Following an old brewing recipe with selected ingredients, it is noble hop aromatic and sweet to drink.

Herrnbrau Tradition Bayerisches Festbier has an alcohol content of 5,6% by volume. My can was packaged on July 15th of 2015 and has a best before date of September 1st, 2016. It boldly proclaims its adherence to the Reinheitsgebot, announced in Ingolstadt as the brewery states above. How appropriate then to drink this beer in this, the year of the 500th anniversary of the Reinheitsgebot.

Herrnbrau Tradition Bayerisches Festbier pours to a brilliant golden color with a thick creamy head and a soft bread malty nose. Taking a sip, the beer bursts with the fresh, soft biscuity-bready maltiness the nose promised. It’s clean and refreshing yet full of favor and finishes with a soft herbal grassy hop aroma and a touch of bitterness. A classic modern Helles Festbier and a beer I enjoyed very, very much.

I’m greatly enjoying my Beer Advent Calendar with the day 3 beer. Here’s looking forward to the remaining 21, and another assortment of 24 in 2016. We’ll be on the lookout next year at Costco, and following the beers on their Facebook page.
