Here’s another entry in Highland Brewing’s Warrior Series of specialty brews: Highland Black Watch Double Chocolate Milk Stout. This is the third beer I have enjoyed from the series, and the first that I found on tap. Highland claims they release one of these specialty beers a month, and they further say of the series:
“Just a wee bit bolder” “High gravity, bold styles define Highland’s Warrior Series”.
And of Black Watch Double Chocolate Milk Stout in particular they say:
Next
in our Warrior Series is a double chocolate milk stout named for Scotland's
Black Watch, the historic military regiment that protected the Highlands.
Brewed with five malts, roasted barley, flaked oats and one pound of cacao
nibs per barrel, we created a rich, high-gravity ale reminiscent of brownie
batter and marshmallows with an aromatic nose and a lingering dark chocolate
finish.
Ingredients from the website:
Hops: Chinook & Willamette
Grist: 2-Row Base, Munich Dark, Chocolate Malt, Carafa II, Roast Barley, Honey Malt & Flaked Oats
Lactose is also added.
Highland Black Watch Double Chocolate Milk Stout has an alcohol content of 8% by volume with 45 IBUs. I paid $7.25 for an 11-ounce glass at Taco Mac, and it runs $10.99 a 4-pack at Total Wine. A little pricey, that.
My glass of Highland Black Watch Double Chocolate Milk Stout arrived a jet-black color with a moderate head of creamy tan foam and luscious powdered cocoa in the nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a full smooth mouthfeel with luscious milk chocolate and a faintly roasty big chocolaty finish that leaves you thinking you just bit into a creamy chocolate bar.
This is wonderful, a big delightful milk chocolate bar of a beer. I’d give it 4 ½ stars less a star for the high price (up a $1 a 4-pack over the last Warrior Series beer I tried), but the beer is so delicious I would still buy it again. If it ever comes back again….
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
