D.O.R.I.S the Destroyer Double Oatmeal Russian Imperial Stout

Hoppin Frog Brewing Company

Review by John Staradumsky • April 12, 2016

Well, I almost made it. You see I bought this bottle of Hoppin' Frog D.O.R.I.S. the Destroyer about 4 years ago, and I wanted to age it for 5. I didn't quite make it, though, as the temptation got to be too much and I drank it the other night. In case you don't know, D.O.R.I.S. the Destroyer is the bigger, badder, bolder version of Hoppin Frog's B.O.R.I.S. the Crusher, or "Bodacious Oatmeal Russian Imperial Stout".

Of course, if D.O.R.I.S. isn't big and bold enough for you, you should know that Hoppin' Frog also offers a barrel aged version of the beer as well. Truth be told, I haven't seen BORIS or DORIS or any of the other wonderful Hoppin' Frog beers here in Georgia in some time. It's not unusual for a brewer to enter a new market, sell a lot of beer to fickle beer geeks there, then pull out to restore demand. Will Hoppin' Frog return to Georgia? I sure hope so.

Hoppin' Frog D.O.R.I.S. the Destroyer has an alcohol content of 10.5% by volume with 70 IBUs.

Tasting Notes

Hoppin' Frog D.O.R.I.S. the Destroyer pours to a jet black color with a thick towering head of tan foam and an intoxicating nose of licorice and roasted malts. Taking a sip the beer is thick as crude oil and packed with licorice, deep dark chocolate, coffee with cream, roasted barley and sinfully smooth and silky oats. In the finish, the beer is quite roasty and dry with warming alcohol.

Value & Verdict

I paid $10.99 for my bottle about 4 years ago, Total Wine sells it in North Carolina currently for $14.99 a bottle. Hoppin' Frog D.O.R.I.S. the Destroyer is doing well indeed with 4 years of age on it. This one could go even longer I think and still be graceful. I guess I'll try to find another bottle and try again. Better yet, maybe I'd better buy two or three.

Buy It Again? Yes, I would.
