Oil of Aphrodite Imperial Stout Brewed with Walnuts

Review Date 4/19/2020 By John Staradumsky

Jackie O’s puts out some mighty amazing beers, let me tell you. Do I have to tell you? Maybe you already know. If not, if you’ve never had the good fortune to enjoy their beers, you should. What’s that you say? Jackie O’s beers are not sold in your area? That could be a problem. But wait! It’s not a problem! There’s always craftshack!

Craftshack is where I bought my latest Jackie O’s beer, Oil of Aphrodite Imperial Stout Brewed with Walnuts. I’m glad I did because yet again, Jackie O’s delivers the goods. I was a little skeptical at first because nuts can be hard to pull off in beer as their subtle flavors can be lost against the backdrop of a beer, especially a style as robust as an imperial stout. I’ll give Jackie O’s credit though, they passed the test with Oil of Aphrodite.

They say on their website and the label:

Oil of Aphrodite is an American double stout brewed with locally harvested black walnuts and Belgian candied syrup. English, German, American, and Belgian malts are accompanied by Pacific Northwest hops, creating a sweet and rich springboard for deep nuttiness.

Ingredients from the website:

HOPS

COLUMBUS/WILLAMETTE

MALTS

2-ROW/BLACK MALT/C-120/CHOCOLATE/MUNICH/OATS/ROASTED BARLEY/SPECIAL ROAST/VIENNA/WHITE WHEAT

OTHER INGREDIENTS

BELGIAN CANDIED SYRUP/WALNUTS

Jackie O’s Oil of Aphrodite Imperial Stout Brewed with Walnuts has an alcohol content of 10% by volume. I paid $8.99 for my bottle from Craftshack, which is not too bad considering it sells for $7.99 a bottle at Total Wine. Jackie O’s beers are not sold here in Georgia, sad to say.

Jackie O’s Oil of Aphrodite Imperial Stout Brewed with Walnuts pours to a jet-black color with a thick creamy tan head and a nose of light roast and crushed walnuts fresh from the shell. Taking a sip, the beer is full in body and quite roasty, harshly so as the beer progresses. Soft fluffy marshmallow and rich subtly sweet candi sugar compete with the roast, adding to it, and supporting the robust black walnut notes that run throughout.

This beer is wonderful, you really get the black walnuts throughout from the nose to the finish. If you say a beer is brewed with black walnuts, I had better taste those black walnuts; I definitely do here. I have to say it: I’m nuts about this beer, and I think you will be, too.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
