Knee Deep Citra Extra IPA

Review Date 11/26/2020  By John Staradumsky

Wednesday, November 4th of 2020 was the day after election day, and no matter your party loyalties, we were all knee deep in the anticipation of still not knowing who won. The morning dragged into the afternoon on into the evening; still no idea who the president would be come January 20th. By that time, I knew what I was going to do: have a beer.

I mean, hey, if I’m going to be knee Deep in something, I’d rather it be beer, and knee deep beer it was: Knee Deep Citra Extra IPA. Knee Deep also makes a Citra Extra Pale Ale, but I had the IPA, and I was enjoying it out on the patio on this fine evening of temperature in the mid-sixties. It made a great first beer of the night, too.

There isn’t a listing for this beer on the Knee Deep site, but I did gather this off of the can label:

New package, same amazing beer! Citra Extra is a single hopped, West-Coast style India Pale Ale with intense hop flavor and aroma. This is a Citra hop bomb that has grapefruit and passionfruit aroma with notes of citrusy lime.

New package? I never even saw the old package. In fact, I haven’t seen Knee Deep beers sold in Georgia for some time. I bought this beer from Craftshack.com where I paid $2.39 for my pint can-a steal, since it sells for $14.49 a 4-pack at Total Wine (but not here in Georgia). Knee Deep Citra Extra IPA has an alcohol content of 7% by volume with 45 IBUs. My can is stamped with packaging date of 02/20/2020, and I received it on June 29th when it went straight into the beer fridge. I drank it on, well, I already told you that.

Knee Deep Citra Extra IPA pours to a slightly hazy amber orange color with a thick fluffy head and a nose of citrus grapefruit and resiny pine. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body with chewy caramel malt, citrusy grapefruit, and resiny pine. It finishes juicy and bitter leaving a dry linger finish. I did get perhaps a hint of passionfruit tropical notes, though I might not have picked up on them had I not read the label.

I enjoyed this very much and next time I order a can I’ll drink it right away. Still and all, it was delightful with a bit of age.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
