Aging beers is a tricky thing. You have to store them properly (that’s the essential part), and know what their limitations are. Don’t age them too long or you’ll get cardboard, or worse. But sometimes, the gamble pays off and the beer actually improves with age. In the case of Prairie Artisan Ales Funky Gold Mosaic, my bottle from 2014 turned out quite well indeed.
Funky Gold Mosaic is an interesting beer indeed, a “dry-hopped sour ale” as described by the brewery. They seem to produce it intermittently, although it is listed still on their website. To my point about aging a beer like this, see the following from the brewery website:
We took Prairie Gold and dry-hopped it with a huge amount of Mosaic hops. The end results are tropical, sour, and an all around new beer drinking experience! This beer is great fresh, but will continue to develop as the wild yeast continues to work in the beer.
Prairie Artisan Ales Funky Gold Mosaic has an alcohol content of 7.5% by volume with 18 IBUs. I got my bottle from Bill and Jenny Crossen so am not sure what this one runs, but Prairie Ales are now sold in Georgia and are rather pricey.
Prairie Artisan Ales Funky Gold Mosaic pours to a murky golden color with a thick head of creamy foam and a vibrant tropical fruity Mosaic nose laced with an olfactory-awakening tartness. Taking a sip, I’m not sure what I taste first, crisp wheaty grain and soft bready malt, tropical citrus fruit or a memorable sourness. I do get them all though.
The sour/tart notes combine with the fruit to make the beer a bit grapefruity even, though that’s not a trait Mosaics are known for. Funky yeasty aroma in the nose and palate ame this a treat too and the beer finjishes sour, not bitter. A wonderful beer, though a ½ star off for the Prairie overpricing. Still, the beer is dangerously drinkable as I sip on my patio on a beautiful late summer day. Yeah, I’d buy that again.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
