Licher Weizen

Hey there beer lovers, do I have good news for you! You don’t have to break the bank to drink great beer. Look, we all know that there are times in our lives when money may be tight. Or maybe we just need to eke out the purchase of that overpriced, hard to find brew with something a little cheaper. You don’t need to sacrifice quality to do that friends, not when there are beers like Licher Weizen available at a bargain price.

Licher Weizen is sold at Aldi supermarkets and is imported from Germany. Licher is located in Lich, Germany and dates to 1854-no newcomer to the craft beer market. Licher is part of the Bitburger Braugruppe, home of such quality beers as Bitburger Pils, Kostritzer Schwarzbier, Konig-Pilsener, and Wernesgruner (also sold at Aldi at a bargain price). They also distribute Benediktiner Weiss in the US.

Licher Weizen is a hefeweizen by style and Aldi sells it in six-packs of 11.2 ounce bottles for just $5.99. That is an incredible bargain these days when most craft beers are running $9.99 a six-pack or more. The beer has an alcohol content of 5.4% by volume and has a bottled-on date on the label of 11.16.2016 and a best before date of 11.16.2017-one year shelf life The bottle conditioning will allow for that.

Licher Weizen pours to a cloudy white yellow color with a thick fluffy head and a heady vanilla, clove, citrus and banana nose. Taking a sip, the beer is smooth and tart wheaty up front with hints of banana and clove though a little less than I got in the nose. Still, the beer is flavorful and refreshing with spicy clove readily apparent and fruity banana too leading into a tart crackery finish.

Is this the best Weizen ever? No, but it’s a very credible one, and at the price another reason why you never need to drink crap beer, even on a budget. It's also a great Valentine gift for your love or yourself. After all, candy is dandy, but Licher is quicker!

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
