Pale From The Crypt

Review Date 12/3/2025 By John Staradumsky

Well folks, it’s about two and a half years since I drank my can of Pale From The Crypt, a pale ale from the Liquid Gravity Brewing Company of San Luis Obispo, California. I took tasting notes on the beer when I drank it but never wrote a full review. I’m doing that this morning but let me tell you first how we got here.

I was enjoying a bottle of Saranac Caramel Porter and went to update my page devoted to that beer here. In doing so, I realized that I had never posted a review of one of the very first Saranac beers I ever tasted, their Adirondack Lager. That beer is an American classic, so I went back and found my tasting notes and photos from the last time I had had it, in March of 2023.

As I looked through the folders from that month, I noticed photos of Ninkasi Sleigh’R Winter Ale, and realized I had never posted a review of that beer, either. It being December and all, I resolved to review that beer directly after finishing up with the Saranac brew, and I did that as you can tell from the hyperlink. Spying photos of Pale From The Crypt in the same folder as the Adirondack Lager, I checked to see if I had reviewed that, found that I had not, and so here we are. A long and winding road to get here, but we have arrived.

I tried to research this beer on the brewery website, but apparently they have failed to renew it and I got an expired message from Squarespace when I went to Liquidgravitybrewing.com. They do have a Facebook page, though they have not posted anything since November 10th. Copilot says they are “termporarily closed”, but assured they are still in business.

Pale From The Crypt is a play on Tales From The Crypt, a classic EC horror copmic series that ran from 1950 to 1955. You can buy reprint collections today, and perhaps read them while sipping a Pale From The Crypt.

From the label:

Pale From The Crypt is a big, bold, unapologetic West Coast Pale Ale. It boasts a robust aroma of peaches, tangerines, and passion fruit. A backbone of two-row barley, caramel malt, and torrified wheat act to balance the beer for a frighteningly satisfying experience.

Liquid Gravity Pale From the Crypt has an alcohol content of 5.5% by volume and I paid $5.99 for my can from Craftshack. They still have it listed as in stock as I type, though for a dollar more for the pint can. Total Wine has it listed for $17.99 a 4-pack at their Redlands, California store, though it says they are currently out of stock.

Liquid Gravity Pale From the Crypt pours to a deep amber color with a fluffy white head and a nose of zesty citrus rind. Taking a sip, the beer is light to medium in body, about right for the style. It is quite fruity, I get the citrus the nose promised, tangerine, tropical pineapple and mango, and stone fruit apricot. The beer finishes with a respectable citrus rind bitterness and is tasty indeed.

I would love to drink this beer again.

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
