I was lost, and then I was found, found with a bottle of Lost Abbey Lost and Found Ale to be quite honest. For this I was judged, this time with a draft glass of Lost Abbey Judgment Day, a Belgian-inspired quadruple ale brewed with raisins. For this decision I was not found wanting; nor for that matter was the beer. Actually, the two beers I’m talking about here are related, since the brewery says of Judgment Day “A massive beer in every sense of the word. A stronger and more contemplative version of our Lost and Found Ale.”
Lost Abbey Judgment Day is a much bigger beer than Lost and Found (10.5% ABV vs. 7.5%), but the flavor profiles are similar. Certainly, this is a sipping beer, and if you spring for the 750 ML bottle ($8.99 in these parts) there’s plenty there to share. One of the things I like so much about Lost Abbey is that they are reasonably priced. That wouldn’t matter if the beer wasn’t good, but it is. Wonderful even.
In fact, when I got my glass of Lost Abbey Judgment Day at Taco Mac it was just $5.75 for an 11 ounce draft glass. Compare that to New Zealand’s MOA St. Joseph’s Tripel, which was another beer on tap that I considered. The MOA beer was of similar strength at 9.5% alcohol by volume. I did have a sample of that beer which was good, but at $9 for the same size glass I opted for the less dear Lost Abbey beer.
Lost Abbey Judgment Day pours to a very dark brown color with a thin layer of head and some delicious dark chocolate and raisins in the nose. Taking a sip, I got more of the same in the palate with molasses and brown sugar notes complementing the raisin fruit notes, really bittersweet chocolate (more so than I got in the nose), layer upon layer of dark malty goodness, and at the last some dry warm alcohol finish. Not much Belgian going on for me, but that does not seem to matter: this is delicious, folks.
Don’t miss this one, less judgment be passed upon you for showing poor judgment. On draft or in the bottle, this is a beer worth seeking out.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
