Hoptapus Citra Hopped Hazy IPA

Review Date 2/25/2026 By John Staradumsky
One thing is for sure about Mason Ale Works of San Diego, California: they have some of the coolest label art in the business. Their labels generally honor, imitate, or lampoon a celebrated character in pop culture. Case in point: Hoptapus Citra Hopped Hazy IPA.
Hoptapus sports a label styled (in a fashion) after Spider-Man’s arch nemesis, Doctor Octopus. It’s as much fun to admire the label as it is to drink the beer, and that’s saying something. Mason Ale Works says:
Bursting with juicy citrus flavor and wrapped in a smooth, hazy body, brewed exclusively with Citra hops, this IPA delivers bold notes of ripe mango, tangy tangerine, and zesty lime, with a touch of stone fruit sweetness and a soft, pillowy mouthfeel
Mason Ale Works Hoptapus Citra Hopped Hazy IPA has an alcohol content of 7.5% by volume and I paid $6.49 for a pint single can at Total Wine where it was selling for $18.99 a 4-pack at the time. My can is stamped CANNED ON 09/12/202 and I drank it on January 22nd of 2026. Mason calls this a Sinister Citra-Hopped Hazy India Pale Ale.
Mason Ale Works Hoptapus Citra Hopped Hazy India Pale Ale pours to a hazy yellow orange color with a thick fluffy white head and a nose of citrus and tropical fruits. A thick layer of Brussels Lace coats the sides of my glass and follows the liquid all the way to the bottom of the glass.
Taking a sip the beer is medium in body and pops quickly with citrusy grapefruit, bright tangerine and tropical mango. It’s smooth with pasty oats, It’s juicy and at the last very bitter indeed with herbal minty hops and grapefruit rind, and finally lingers long and dry.
Very delicious and I give it 4 stars on its own merits, it is a bit overpriced methinks, but I enjoyed it enough that I will not take anything off for that. I would absolutely love to see it on tap at Taco Mac.
Glad I tried it?

Would I rebuy it??
