Let me tell you, you can’t go wrong with beer from Natty Greene’s Brewery of Greensboro, North Carolina. Case in point: Natty Greene’s Old Town Brown Ale, a beer they call a classic brown ale. This beer is packed with delicious malty goodness, and that’s what I want in a “classic” English-style brown ale. They use chocolate in this brew, which is decidedly not classic, but it sure makes for a great brew.
Curiously enough, this is a seasonal beer from Natty Greene’s, a January-February release. A beer this good in a staple style would be well suited to year-round distribution methinks, but such is not the case. It certainly hits the spot on an unusually cool Sunday afternoon in August, and I think it would make a wonderful fall beer.
From the brewery website:
Named after one of our favorite local watering holes, Old Town Draught House, Old Town Brown is the perfect beer to settle down with at the end of a long, cold day.
Dark roast malt gives Old Town a slightly sweet flavor. Baker's chocolate is then added to create a bitter, dry finish. The perfect recipe to kick off the New Year.
Natty Greene’s Old Town Brown Ale has an alcohol content of 4.7% by volume with 10 IBUs. I paid $7.99 for a six-pack at Total Wine, a real bargain these days.
Natty Greene’s Old Town Brown Ale pours to a well brown color with a medium head of creamy tan foam and a soft cookies and molasses nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a medium to full body with notes of chocolate chip cookies, molasses, toasted nuts and bittersweet dark chocolate. The finish is gently grassy bitter and balances out the sweetness.
I just love the dark nutty malts here accented by the dark chocolate notes. This is a wonderful brown ale friends, I would give it 4 stars on its own merits and I will tack on another ½ star for the lovely low price.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
