Oni Triple IPA

New brewery alert! For me anyway. Yes friends, this is my first beer ever from the New Hokkaido Brewery of, well, where the hell are they from? The label says they are “A phantom brewery, everywhere and nowhere.” Well that’s sure interesting. How can they be everywhere and nowhere? Especially since right now, they’re in my glass. That beer, New Hokkaido Oni Triple IPA, comes from a can that says it was Brewed & Canned by New Hokkaido Brewing Company, Bozeman, Montana, under contract I assume.

The label also says:

ONI IS THE WORST KIND OF OGRE. HE’S ONLY HAPPY WHEN HE’S SPREADING DISASTER OR TORTURING THE SOULS OF THE DAMNED. BUT DON’T TELL HIM WE SAID THAT.

Tasting Notes: Big, bold, dangerous

Ingredients from the label:

Water, yeast, malted barley, hops, Hokkaido rice.

New Hokkaido Oni Triple IPA has an alcohol content of 10% by volume and I paid $5.01 for my can from Craftshack, and that is the only pricing I have. I bought the beer on August 2nd 2021 but did not drink it until June 12th of 2022. So many beers, so little time. My can is stamped on the bottom CANNED ON 06/04/21 ONI 204.

New Hokkaido Oni Triple IPA pours to a very hazy orange color with a thick rocky head of foam and a nose of intense orange grapefruit peel-zest. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body, perhaps with a bit of lightness imparted by the Japanese rice. That adds a smoothness as well, and the beer is easier drinking than it should be at this strength. The citrus pops back up and the beer is quite juicy. There is mild bitterness in the finish (I would like more with a TIPA), but this is tasty and the alcohol warms at the last.

Really loving this, juicy citrus notes with bitter peel especially at the last, medium body lightened with the Japanese rice. Finishes dry and lightly bitter, but only lightly bitter. To recap. Perhaps some of the bitterness has faded as the beer is a year old, which would be on me, but at a year old it drank wonderfully. I will be on the lookout for more New Hokkaido beers for sure.

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
