Acme is a beer with a history. National Brewing, Acme's original producer,
began their operations in San Francisco in the 1860's,and survived
prohibition to produce the brand in the thirties, forties, and fifties.
Eventually, Blitz-Weinhard obtained the Acme label and brewed it until the
seventies. The beer was famous for the ornate labels pasted to it's bottles,
and that tradition continues with the latest incarnation of Acme beers being
produced by California's North Coast Brewing. North Coast is known for their
big beers like Old Number 38 stout and especially Old Rasputin Imperial, but
they have a way with delicate beers as well. I appreciate this, one can
enjoy an imperial stout or abbey ale, but that doesn't mean it's the right
beer for every possible occasion.
Acme Brown Ale is brown in color with a slight orange tinge. It has a
respectable head and a sweet, very malty nose. The palate is very smooth with
a heavy, sweet molasses note in the finish. A light hop bite in the finish
rounds the beer out nicely. This is a very good example of an English dark
mild / brown ale. Extremely drinkable but with plenty of flavor. Very
impressive!
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
