Voila! Another really tasty beer from the Odd 13 Brewing Company of Lafayette, Colorado: Odd13 Master of Unrelated Science Dry Hopped Saison. This is the third beer I’ve tried from these guys and the third beer I’ve enjoyed, too. It doesn’t hurt that in addition to drinking beer I’m also fond of reading comic books, and the fine folks at Odd13 surely are, too, with their comic character inspired beer names and labels.
Of course, you don’t have to be a comics fan to appreciate the beer: you just need to love good beer. Odd13 is a limited release brew and I’ll let Odd13 tell you about it:
Much like Professor Hops and Doctor Cougar, Master of Unrelated Science is fermented with a farmouse yeast strain and Brettanomyces. The beer is pale orange, with intense fruitiness from the blend of Citra and Sterling. The blend of farmhouse yeast and Brettanomyces add complexity in the form of pepper-like phenolics, and earthy yeast notes.
Ingredients:
Fermentables: Weyermann Vienna, Weyermann Acidulated, Weyermann Munich II, Weyermann Rye Malt, Rahr 2-Row
Hops: Citra, Sterling
Yeast : Wallonian Farmhouse, Amalgamation 6 Brett Blend
My can of Odd13 Master of Unrelated Science Dry Hopped Saison has an alcohol content of 6.4% by volume with 45 IBUs. It’s been in my beer fridge for about a year, though, and the brewery website says the beer has an alcohol content currently of 6.7%. Odd13 beers are not sold in Georgia, but my buddy Dale Roberts hooked me up with this one.
Odd13 Master of Unrelated Science Dry Hopped Saison pours to a beautiful orange amber color with a thick creamy head and an amazing funk and earthy hop nose that makes you just want to take a bath in the stuff. Taking a sip, the beer has a complex maltiness up front, toasty and nutty and spicy with rye, then the Brett yeast kicks in and adds a distinct funky horse blanket note. The hops are softly citrusy, perhaps earthier. The fruitiness may have faded but this beer is truly amazing. Finishes dry and bitter and wonderful indeed.
I would certainly buy this again if it were sold in my area.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
