Pow! Bam! Ziff! That’s what you get in every can of Odd13 beer. This Lafayette, Colorado brewer uses a comic book theme for its brews, something this paneloligist and beer aficionado can truly appreciate. Take the latest beer I’ve popped from Odd13: Super Sneak Hop Bursted Tart Farmhouse Ale. This beer was exceptional and that with a little over a year of age on it in one of my beer fridges. Should we expect any less from a super beer like Super Sneak?
Super Sneak is released in cans every April, so if you’re in their distribution area you can get some as I type. Super Sneak also seems to have morphed from a super canine to a super heroine but, hey, we’re not complaining. Anyway, from the brewery website:
Super Sneak is a unique combination of styles. First, the beer is soured in the kettle until the target pH is reached, at which point it is boiled to kill the lacto. It is massively hopped at the end of the boil (some people call this hop-bursting) with hop varieties that have huge tropical character. The hop-bursting is accentuated by a massive dose of dry hops and the byproducts of a fermentation with multiple strains of Brettanomyces.
Ingredients listed there:
Fermentables: Rahr Premium Pils, Rahr Red Wheat, Flaked Oats
Hops: Equinox, Citra, Mosaic
Souring Agent: Lactobacillus delbrueckii, lactobacillus brevis, lactobacillus fermentum
Yeast: Six-strain blend of Brettanomyces
Odd 13 Super Sneak Hop Bursted Tart Farmhouse Ale has an alcohol content of 6.9% by volume according to my can, though the website now says it’s at 6.5%. I got my can from good old Dale Roberts.
Odd 13 Super Sneak Hop Bursted Tart Farmhouse Ale pours to a hazy yellow orange color with a thick but short lived spritzy head and an intense resiny and funky brett nose. I got a burst of grassy hop aroma when I popped the can. Taking a sip the beer is crisp and light malty up front but then packed with funky Brett character, a little tropical fruity from the Mosaics (passion fruit to me), and some citrusy grapefruit from the Amarillo and Citra hops. Finishes kind of like Orval but not as leafy hoppy as that one.
Just amazing! This is a beer I would definitely buy again if it were sold here in Georgia. I just love toe unique combination of sour lactobacillic fermentation with funky Brett and diverse hop notes. It’s a beer that made my most impressive list for 2016 so far. And that, my friends, is definitely a reason for you to try it.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
